I don't remember a time when I wasn't both an artist and a gardener!

I've worked as a landscape contractor-designer in Northern California for 30 years. Most of my work has been in West Marin, Petaluma and Mill Valley. I've designed very small gardens and very large projects with masonry, irrigation systems, decks, gazebos, ponds, waterfalls, and fireplaces. I've enjoyed working with many styles and concepts: japanese gardens, southwest style patios, middle eastern fountains, deer tolerant native landscapes.

I began my landscaping work with biodynamics and the french intensive work of Alan Chadwick. I learned a great deal about double digging and vegetables, but flowers have always been my inspiration. I've worked in many situations - places where there is too much shade, too much wind, the soil too heavy, the sun too hot, etc. I've learned the practicalities of irrigation and construction, but the balancing of colors and textures is what I am most adept at. It's important to chose plants that will thrive in the conditions of the site; it's also important that those who live there love what they see.

For many years, I had employees, insurance, etc. Mostly, I now design gardens that others will install, although I can recommend people I've worked with and know well.

Large Garden, Mill Valley

This large project in Mill Valley is in its second year. It consists of mosly foliage plants - different textures and colors in the leaves. There is something blooming all the time. I've also created a vegetable garden, rose garden and a play area for the children.

Roof Garden, Inverness - a green remodel

This living roof blooms all year long. The three inches of soil and the plants provide insulation. The drip system drains into a marsh area that provides food and habitat for animals, birds and insects. This site is under construction - more pictures will follow in the spring!
